Polaris 280 Hose Gets Tangled
The Polaris 280 Pool Cleaner is an excellent pool cleaner for keeping a residential swimming pool clean all year long. But even with the best pool cleaners on the market, there are occasional problems that need to be fixed. With the
Polaris 280 Pool Cleaner
a common problem is the feed hose getting tangled and tying itself in knots. Try the following tips to see if they solve the problem.
Is the Feed Hose the Proper Length? - If the feed hose is too long, the result will most likely be the cleaner will end up in knots. To test to see if the
Polaris 280 Feed Hose
is the proper length for the pool, turn the cleaner off and stretch the cleaner to the farthest point in the pool. The end of the feed hose, at the point where it connects to the cleaner, should be around 12 inches beyond the edge of the swimming pool.
Check the Wheels - There are a couple different problems that can happen with the
Polaris 280 Wheels
. First, the wheels can wear down and stop working. If one of the drive wheels has worn down and is not engaging the gears, the cleaner may move in circles resulting in a tangled hose. Secondly, if the
Polaris 280 Wheel Bearings
have worn out or fallen apart and are not functioning properly, the wheels will not work properly and the hose could tie itself in knots.
Is the Feed Hose Floating? - The feed hose should have floats spaced throughout the hose. The purpose of these floats is to keep the feed hose from sinking to the bottom of the pool. The
Polaris 280 Hose Floats
can lose their buoyancy as they get old resulting in the feed hose sinking to the bottom of the swimming pool. When the feed hose sinks to the bottom of the pool, the cleaner will repeatedly run over the hose and eventually tie itself in knots.
Backup Valve Not Working - Test the
Polaris 280 Backup Valve
to make sure it is working properly. The backup valve is installed on the feed hose about 6 – 8 feet from the cleaner... see the image below.

Its purpose is to periodically reverse the water flow and pull the cleaner out from corners or any other spot in the pool where it might get stuck. While the pool cleaner is running, carefully pull the feed hose out of the water until the backup valve is just above the surface of the water. Watch the backup valve for a few minutes to make sure it cycles properly. Most of the time there shouldn't be any water coming out of the valve, but periodically it should push a significant amount of water out of the valve and then slowly shut off. Sometimes the backup valve will crack or not cycle properly and get stuck in backup mode resulting in a tangled hose.
Try these tips for solving the problem of a tangled feed hose on a
Polaris 280 Pool Cleaner
. If the problem is not solved, seek help from a local pool service professional or pool store.
